We hiked all over during the evening, and didn't find much elk sign... but did find a mountain lion's cache of a kill. Elias got some good practice time in with his new BB gun, and really dialed in his shooting. We slept out on cots under the stars - didn't get too very cold, but we still stayed in our sleeping bags until the sun fully came up.
That morning we hiked into Rainbow Lake and Elias reeled in a beauty of a mountain cutthroat - an honest 18" monster that we coaxed onto the hook with a live grasshopper that Elias himself caught that morning at our campsite. And, we had a BLAST catching frogs and toads at the lake edge!
After hiking back out, Elias soaked up the warm fall breeze as we drove down the dusty county roads back to the highway.
Pointing down to the deer leg/hoof sticking out of the mountain lion's cache
Surveying the country - wearing my old little league baseball shirt from ca. 1980.
Dinner! Hot dog, bun. mustard. No veggies.
Waking under the open sky
Hiking into Rainbow Lake. Loaded for bear. Very small bear.
Arriving at Rainbow Lake
After 7-8 tries, Elias finally caught him!
After many tries, Elias catches a Columbia spotted frog
Untangling a line
Laughing with a vocal (and wet) western toad
Enjoying the warm day on the ride down from the mountains
