Elias and I started work on Fort Ponderosa last weekend, and he was joined by Finn and friend Spencer yesterday to add roofing structure and also to clear some of the dead branches on the main trunk of the tree (so one can make a more hasty retreat to the 30' above-ground-level if needed).
We started by picking just the right Ponderosa pine that was close to but not too close to 'the orchard' - a small group of apple and pear trees down the hill that are probably close to 100 years old, and that are frequented this time of year by deer, black bears, and hungry neighborhood kids. Then we laid out the base of the dome shape on the ground, and started collecting branches from the ground and from nearby trees with our trusty pack saw. Sure, it was near impossible work (not really) and it took weeks of work (coupla hours, actually), and we know it doesn't look like much from the outside (it's not supposed to... duh...) but now it just needs some bench seating, some non-apple snacks, and maybe a couple of good books. And maybe a slingshot in case one of those bears comes around during daylight hours.
